Waiopehu Hut

Waiopehu Hut Outline
Waiopehu hut is an 18 bunk standard (1 ticket) hut about 10km from the Poads Road Entrance to the Tararua Forest Park. The Hut sits on the bush line at 950 m. The Western peak of Waiopehu is about 25 minutes above the hut. On clear days, good views are across the plains and east to the Tararua high peaks. Ruapehu and Taranaki are often seen.

It takes approx. 4-5 hours to reach the hut from the road-end up a ridge track through the bush and, for the last 15 minutes, subalpine scrub. It is a safe trip year-round because of the bush shelter and no rivers to cross. There are no water sources on the track to the hut (but plenty at the hut).

The present hut is the third.

The first one was destroyed by a storm in 1936.

The second, built in 1947, was demolished in 2002 after the 3rd was built.

LWTC contributed financially, physically, and mentally to the new hut as a way of celebrating the club’s 75 anniversary. Since the hut was completed club members have continued to contribute to hut and track maintenance.

The hut has no fire for heating or cooking. Visitors need to bring their own cooking equipment. The hut is double-glazed and very well-insulated, including underfloor. There are 18 mattresses inside and 3 dog kennels outside.
